Jockey Quotes - George Ryder Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $1,000,000 The Agency George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Tommy Berry (Gringotts): “I was smiling for a different reason, it wasn't for winning but it was just good to see him come back the way he did. You pay the believers and we're guys that are part of the ownership team and Ciaron and Joe and all the team at home there.

“He came to me in the middle of the mounting yard today and he said 'I know the Doncaster is our main aim but I couldn't have him any better for today. He turned up and he's just a war horse, he knows where the line is and he fought hard to win today.

“I didn't really want Zac there to be honest with you. I dropped to the fence and I was like, 'I've done you a favour’, but he just cruised up underneath me, I was just hoping Royal Patronage would take me further into the straight and when he was left a sitting duck. I knew he's been in that position a couple of times before and he was just way too good, so it's a pretty good feeling.”

Gringotts wins the George Ryder Stakes

James McDonald (Fangirl): “You win some, you lose some. She has gone well.”

Chad Schofield (Ceolwulf): “Fantastic run.”

Ben Melham (Tom Kitten): “He ran terrifically. The gate was a major minus for him.”

Tim Clark (Royal Patronage): “He ran great again. Not beaten far and holding his form well.”

Damian Lane (Buckaroo): “Really good return. Slow into stride but picked up, travelled well mid-race and quickened really good at the end.”

Zac Lloyd (Militarize): “He was disappointing. He began well and made my mind up to go forward. He got across without using any petrol. Just lacked that killer punch.”

Hugh Bowman (Celestial Legend): “I think he is going better than his form reads. He just needs a wet track.”

Nash Rawiller (Kovalica): “A nice return. An even tempo and lacked a turn of foot at the top of the straight. Finished off well.”

Mark Zahra (Port Lockroy): “Good run. Travelled well. Hit the line well. Chance in the Doncaster.”

Jason Collett (Stefi Magnetica): “Found the right spot. Presented like the winner on straightening. Didn't have the kick late.”
